Huge congratulations to Mayday Saxonvale – on 23 January Somerset Executive agreed to sell the Saxonvale site to them. Green councillors and supporters in Frome are delighted with the decision.
Frome East Green Cllr Shane Collins said: “Since Acorn’s unprecedented refusal in August to take up Somerset Executive’s offer to buy the Saxonvale site after overwhelming community opposition and details of Acorn’s financial past came to light, Somerset Executive have seen the light and agreed to sell to Mayday.
Somerset Executive’s decision to sell Saxonvale to Mayday represents is a huge victory for the people of Frome and progressive green development.
To paraphrase Churchill’s summation of the USA, Somerset Executive have made the right decision, having exhausted all other possibilities.
We look forward to Mayday’s community led development with 30% social housing owned by Frome Area Community Land Trust (FACLT) so the social housing does not fall under ‘right to buy’, as well as much needed work space and housing. As one of four Green Councillors in Frome we are glad to have played our part in supporting Mayday over the years. We also look forward to a swim in the new Lido in a year or two and send best wishes to Mayday and FACLT in this innovative and inclusive new development.
This is the right decision for Frome which has overwhelming support from residents and a very effective local campaign with thousands of supporters.
We look forward to celebrating in town tonight. “
